In the world of design, shape and form are critical elements that play a pivotal role in achieving the desired outcome. Like a painter’s brush or a writer’s pen, shape and form are the tools a designer uses to express ideas and bring them to life. Used with care and precision, they can evoke emotions and inspire a sense of awe in the beholder. A major approach that drives Zieta Studio’s creations is bionics, which draws inspiration from the natural world to create shapes that are visually pleasing, technologically challenging, and functional.
But bionics is not just about function and efficiency. The shapes and forms found in nature are often breathtakingly beautiful, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe in those who behold them. The intricate patterns of a butterfly’s wings or the swirling curves of a seashell can be translated into stunning designs that captivate the imagination. Bionics is not just a means to an end, but a celebration of the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
Direct inspiration from all around
Nature has always been a rich source of inspiration for artists, designers and engineers. The bionics approach, in particular, focuses on the structural and functional aspects of natural forms, such as the shape of a leaf, the structure of a bird’s wings, or the strength of the joints between tree branches. By studying how nature has evolved over millions of years, we as designers gain insights into how to create more efficient, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing objects.
Cross-cutting bionics
At Zieta Studio, inhouse studies in forms and shapes highlight the crucial role played by technological potential. Exploring the FiDU manufacturing process and high-performing parametric design, natural inspirations are translated into robotics solutions. To draw an immediate parallel, the FiDU process acts with metal the same as the wings of a dragonfly respond to the body fluids pumped into them. The pressure increases both volume and stability. The shape reflects not only nature, but also the method of forming the final object.
Objects expressing delight
Zieta Studio’s observations of the surroundings are reflected in shapes that tell stories about the world of nature, both directly and metaphorically. A series of metal mirrors interpret the evolution of water, which reflects all around on its surface—from tiny droplets of morning dew to huge, geometrically shaped ice shelves. The tables frame the narrative about the ambitious forming of floral structures in the beauty of their curves and their strength in stability. Design inspirations come from close microscopic examination as well as gigantic cosmic mysteries.
The use of shape and form in the design field is a powerful tool that can be harnessed to create beautiful and functional objects. Bionics, in particular, offers a way to draw inspiration from the natural world, exploiting its vast and diverse array of shapes and forms to create designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. By looking to nature, designers can find solutions to problems and create designs that are more sustainable and efficient, while also celebrating the beauty and complexity of the world around us.
