MSN Warsaw Takes a Seat on Ultralightness

Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw

ul. Marszałkowska 103, 00-110 Warsaw, Poland

We are thrilled to be part of history in the making. The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw has chosen ultralightness for its seating. 150 Ultraleggera chairs have proudly begun their multi-generational and responsible mission within the new walls of MSN Warsaw.

History often unfolds quietly. It’s shaped by unique moments, exceptional people and initiatives. The MSN Warsaw project is one such example—a one-of-a-kind composition. The work of the great architect Thomas Phifer, a temple of light, a space for grand, large-scale art by Magdalena Abakanowicz, with many extraordinary moments yet to come. Let’s stay alert and open to experience.

Ultraleggera was created with projects like MSN Warsaw in mind. For places where a sustainable, ultralight chair can play a heroic role in a public space. For sitting and admiring. To be composed and stacked.
“There was a lot of art, but only one chair”

~ Łukasz Gorczyca
 (Polish art historian, critic, curator,
 and cofounder of Raster Gallery)

The new MSN Warsaw building invites such experiences. Only full immersion in its scale, light, and space creates a complete narrative. Similarly with our Ultraleggera chair—experiencing it fully turns this utilitarian object into a balanced work of art and an ultralight narrative of Zieta Studio’s values.

Ultraleggera is a socially engaged project. Its featherweight is not only an emotional phenomenon but also a responsible decision for accessibility. Thanks to its functionality, Ultraleggera is an object for every generation, designed to be easily moved, rearranged, and passed on.

Ultraleggera’s responsibility also lies in its durability. The chair will not age, neither technologically nor through use. It is made of the highest-quality aluminium, which, as a natural alloy, can be recycled multiple times with almost no loss of quality. Ultraleggera is a durable, monomaterial object for the generations. But only a conscious decision to recycle it can complete its circular mission.

Constant optimization of the lightweight index, i.e. the ratio of the mass of objects to their strength, is one of Oskar Zięta’s areas of material research. Exploiting the potential of algorithms and FiDU technology allows for creation of very light, stable objects that can withstand enormous loads. Ultraleggera, in its raw version, weighs just over 1,660 g and can withstand a load of over 1.2 tonnes.

At Zieta Studio, we design single-material objects that are sustainable and ultralight. All the while adhering to our idea of “less is less”—desiring less, consuming less, and using less. The point of these ultralight narratives is precisely Ultraleggera: a responsible chair, a circular chair, a chair for generations.
